“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” – John 14:18
This is my favorite promise of Jesus Christ. I would defend that it is also one of the most beautiful. In these words you see the promise of healing a wound but also that Jesus Himself will be the fulfillment that actually completes the filling of the hole. Jesus knows that one of the largest gaps in the human heart is the gap of feeling abandoned by those who should love you most; in this case, your parents. For far too many throughout the course of history, the abandonment feeling hits way too close to home. Which introduces the need for the guardians. Jesus Himself saying He will be the leader of.
The guardians are those who take the initiative to actively seek the vulnerable who are looking for someone to take them in. There is someone in your realm of influence who is in need of a father or mother. And it is a blessing that you are gifted the responsibility of tending to their needs and cares. This is something you have been entrusted with. A power that you possess but are held accountable to bestow that power onto those who are in need of adoption. Simply put, adoption leads to completion.
The story of creation is that there is ultimately a need for the restoration of creation and creation to be completed. A beautiful detail in this restorative process is that you can be the answer to someone’s progress towards their completion. They may be incomplete but you can be their answer. That is the power that Jesus Himself entrusts you with and empowers you to do. Adoption is an answer, not a burden. Adoption sets you free because it introduces you to a purpose that stretches far beyond the normal realm. Adoption brings you into the supernatural realm. Adoption is creation. When you adopt, you create a new bond, or a new family that has the ability to transcend the natural means of communication. Adoption leads to a level of communication that instills that this love holds the power of choice. A mutual choice. The one being adopted and the one adopting have the freedom to choose the other. The beauty of Jesus’ promise is that He has chosen you before you chose Him, but He still invites you to accept His promise.
