My response to NEEDTOBREATHE’s song “Hideaway”.
If I could summarize the whole song into one phrase it would be: a nostalgic reflection of how the future becomes possible. It’s nostalgic in the sense that the instrumental music just draws you in. Before the first lyric is spoken you can realize your emotions awaken to a melody that takes you to a place. And in the case of this song, that place is a person. But not just any person. A person who knows the other so closely that there is an omnipresent connection in an omnipotent relationship. Yet in the midst of the omni – words there is still a romantic flare. One person looks at themself and sees insecurity yet still provides a place of safety. The things that this other person “can’t escape” can still find a sanctuary of freedom in the arms of the person whose voice is speaking. The speaking voice still holds a confidence, or swagger, despite the lack of appreciation of oneself. This confidence, found in the love of the other person, is given peace in the words of a promise. This promise is the glue that holds together the two through all the challenges and eventually leads to my favorite lyric in the whole song: “We’re gonna find a way.” It is in this lyric that the speaker solidifies the hideaway relationship. Thus leading into a road that revisits the song “Into the Mystery”. They will go down a road that will reach something that is impossibly attainable and one will depend on the other to be the hideaway to help get there.
